Summary

The first easily accessible translation of the esoteric writings that inspired some of the world?s greatest artists, scientists, and philosophers。

Here is an essential digest of the Greco-Egyptian writings attributed to the legendary sage-god Hermes Trismegistus (Greek for thrice-greatest Hermes)?a combination of the Egyptian Thoth and the Greek Hermes。

The figure of Hermes was venerated as a great and mythical teacher in the ancient world and was rediscovered by the finest minds of the Renaissance。 The writings attributed to his hand are a time capsule of Egyptian and Greek esoteric philosophy and have influenced figures including Blake, Newton, Milton, Shelley, Shakespeare, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Jung。

Providing a fascinating introduction to the intersection of the Egyptian and Hellenic cultures and the magico-religious ideas of the antique world, The Hermetica is a marvelous volume for anyone interested in understanding the West?s roots in mystical thought。

a good introduction to the hermetic tradition, though one should not consider this as the end-all-be-all。 the translations are true enough; for that, it deserves credit。 beyond that, freke and gandy do so good a job simplifying aspects of the hermetica as to virtually kill all nuance。 the chapter introductions deflate dimensions of the text that should otherwise be afforded much attention。 additionally, freke and gandy's reputation for historical inaccuracies and generally poor research should m a good introduction to the hermetic tradition, though one should not consider this as the end-all-be-all。 the translations are true enough; for that, it deserves credit。 beyond that, freke and gandy do so good a job simplifying aspects of the hermetica as to virtually kill all nuance。 the chapter introductions deflate dimensions of the text that should otherwise be afforded much attention。 additionally, freke and gandy's reputation for historical inaccuracies and generally poor research should make the reader wary of the lengthy introduction, which makes some claims that are dubious at best。 overall, and as a re-iteration, this is a wonderful starting point -- if the reader is to keep an open mind and take the time to fact-check and dig deeper。 if you love this, i would implore you to pick up a more scholarly edition of the hermetica; trust me, despite what freke and gandy say, it is quite approachable :) never doubt your abilities! 。。。more

It’s hard to say why, but the book feels like it’s holding back。 I understand that this is more of an introduction than anything so it makes sense that it would do this。 However I could not read it without the constant nagging that this is made to be digestible instead of deep。 The sections “The Living Cosmos”, “The Circle of Time”, “Knowledge of Atum”, and “Secret Teachings” were my favorite and did give me some new insight。

Good stuff。For the money this can't be beat。 This is the first translation I have read of The Hermetically and I am greatly looking forward to reading other translations to see how this one stacks up。 On a personal note, I would have preferred that the commentary come after the translation from each section。 No real complaint。。。I am sure others would prefer it just the way it is。 Good stuff。For the money this can't be beat。 This is the first translation I have read of The Hermetically and I am greatly looking forward to reading other translations to see how this one stacks up。 On a personal note, I would have preferred that the commentary come after the translation from each section。 No real complaint。。。I am sure others would prefer it just the way it is。 。。。more

A must-read! I wish the book was longer though。 I would have liked to see more content and dept in explaining Atum, Cosmos, and human relations。 One thing I must say is that Hermes might have meant consciousness not mind when he referred to awareness。 I think he means that we are pure consciousness like the Universe。 That God is pure consciousness as well。 I think a mind is just a tool。 I would have liked to find a book that is a more in-depth and wide explanation of enlightenment。 Overall, the A must-read! I enjoyed The Hermetica。 This is only the second philosophy book I've read, so I am just learning。 The history alone made me interested in this, knowing it may have been written over 5,000 years ago by great Egyptian and Greek philosophers, eventually collated in the Library of Alexandria。 Also knowing that eminent figures in history, like Newton, da Vinci, Shakespeare, and Jung praised the philosophies in these writings, I feel very privileged to have been able to read this。As the summary state I enjoyed The Hermetica。 This is only the second philosophy book I've read, so I am just learning。 The history alone made me interested in this, knowing it may have been written over 5,000 years ago by great Egyptian and Greek philosophers, eventually collated in the Library of Alexandria。 Also knowing that eminent figures in history, like Newton, da Vinci, Shakespeare, and Jung praised the philosophies in these writings, I feel very privileged to have been able to read this。As the summary states, this short book serves as an introduction to Egyptian and Greek philosophies。 Even reading this as an atheist, I still feel like I got a lot out of it。 I may not agree with a God/Atum/Supreme Being, but I do believe the Universe itself may be the Creator (i。e。, pantheism)。 I do like the idea of life being a circle, that there is no beginning and end。 Also that energy/spirit can neither be created nor destroyed。 I believe in these concepts too。 It also discusses enlightenment - leaving the cycle and becoming one with Atum - as other religions like Buddhism follow。I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in an intro to ancient Egyptian and Greek philosophies。 The ideas in this seem to form the basis for many modern religions。 。。。more

I am a strong believer that certain books have a way of finding you。 Cosmically speaking。 The Hermetica was a perfect example of this。 Came across a quote in a horoscope I had read that spoke to me a few months back。 Feeling intrigued, I did some research only to discover the words originated from the lost wisdom of the Pharaohs, hence resulting in my introduction to this book。 The true magic of this book is the depiction of how ancient Egyptian wisdom transcends to Western life, so succinctly。 I am a strong believer that certain books have a way of finding you。 Cosmically speaking。 The Hermetica was a perfect example of this。 Came across a quote in a horoscope I had read that spoke to me a few months back。 Feeling intrigued, I did some research only to discover the words originated from the lost wisdom of the Pharaohs, hence resulting in my introduction to this book。 The true magic of this book is the depiction of how ancient Egyptian wisdom transcends to Western life, so succinctly。 It's a simple and educational read filled with philosophy, history, spirituality and poetry。 Quite a perfect blend。 For whoever is meant to read my words, this quote is for you:"As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul…” -Hermes TrismegistusHappy reading! 。。。more

I love reading books about spirituality。 This is a must read。 I am always looking for a new way of looking at old ideas。 This certainly revealed truths in a different way

Honestly, found it to be a bit watered down。 As the goal was to make these ancient teachings more accessible, it works。 And any time and any way of bringing ancient teachings to light is a positive。 Did enjoy reading the book。

DNF 37%。 I thought that this book was about Pharaohs and Egypt。 It's just another booking pushing an entity that doesn't exist。 It is mislead from the cover and blurb, feel like its trying to brianwash me。 DNF 37%。 I thought that this book was about Pharaohs and Egypt。 It's just another booking pushing an entity that doesn't exist。 It is mislead from the cover and blurb, feel like its trying to brianwash me。 。。。more

Creo que es una de las mejores recopilaciones de textos que me he encontrado de Hermes。 Viene bien fundamentado de dónde saca cada uno de los capítulos, trae un prefacio donde el autor explica un poco o contextualiza el texto de Hermes。 Me encantó

An interesting look into Ancient Egyptian Religion, The Hermetica has many ideas which I find agreeable。 Hermes maintains that science does not disprove God, but more rather shines a light on how awesome his creations are, for example。 As a Christian, there was a lot in the first couple of chapters I was interest in。 But then he started discussing the other gods。 Still a very fascinating read if you're interested in religious studies or ancient mythologies, but definitely not something someone dev An interesting look into Ancient Egyptian Religion, The Hermetica has many ideas which I find agreeable。 Hermes maintains that science does not disprove God, but more rather shines a light on how awesome his creations are, for example。 As a Christian, there was a lot in the first couple of chapters I was interest in。 But then he started discussing the other gods。 Still a very fascinating read if you're interested in religious studies or ancient mythologies, but definitely not something someone devoted to a relationship with God would take 100% seriously。 。。。more

Simple and complex, this fascinating work clearly has inspired so many philosophers and religions, ancient and modern。 It was a surprisingly quick read, one that I must read again later。

This is not a translation, but a rewriting for lack of a better way to explain in。 Truly epic though。 I love this book (bought 6 copies to hand out)。 Only thing I can suggest is to read it yourself。I will note that I have read the 17 main sources this text comes from (The Corpus Hermeticum), in fact I have read 3 different translations of it, and this summary, readers digest version of the philosophy of Hermes Trismegistus is in my opinion second to only the original text, and sometimes even sur This is not a translation, but a rewriting for lack of a better way to explain in。 Truly epic though。 I love this book (bought 6 copies to hand out)。 Only thing I can suggest is to read it yourself。I will note that I have read the 17 main sources this text comes from (The Corpus Hermeticum), in fact I have read 3 different translations of it, and this summary, readers digest version of the philosophy of Hermes Trismegistus is in my opinion second to only the original text, and sometimes even surpasses it when it comes to transnational confusion and error。 。。。more

It’s a revelation to read this compilation of the Hermetic texts that survive, finally knowing the true words from ancient wisdom that have anchored the progress of humanity across many eras of civilization in the many parts of the world。 These teachings came from Egypt, the home to most of the spiritual concepts that have blessed our world, and this text brings us all closer to that source of wisdom。
